I guess it's about time I post this old girl on the forum. The sale of the Libby was mostly brough on by a few life changes and a lot by finding this Duffy. It has been sitting at my buddy's yard for the last 12 years or so, covered and waiting for something to give it some attention. The engine is a Volvo TAMD31B, 130hp. The aftercooler failed while the prior owner was using the boat and the engine ingested water. It was removed from the boat, partially rebuilt, and then sat for a few years. At some point someone put it back in the boat, but never fired it off. I ended up getting it for, what I felt like, was a steal. I've been messing with it all winter, rebuilt the oil cooler, freed up the turbo, and just going through the boat. Now that she's sea-trialed I thought I could share it with everyone. Also, she got 16.9 kts with that little weed wacker engine too!

I guess a few specs on the boat are in order as well. It's a 1989 Duffy, finished off by Alan Johnson, with a nice molded deck. Two fuel tanks totally about 120 gallons of fuel. The Volvo is a TAMD31B with a 2.5:1 Borg Warner V-drive reverse gear. It swings a 20x18 3 blade prop, and achieved 3700RPM on seatrial, although I believe the turbo isn't producing enough boost as it's smoking pretty black above 2500ish RPMs. I need to measure boost pressure and get that and the turbo sorted out before I adjust the pitch on the prop.

Love the big windows- congrats on it. Lot less boat to wash too.

HA that turbo is indeed running in the boat! I chipped all the rust off the housing/rotor and she spins fine. New stainless exhaust mixer as the old cast one was absolute junk. I'll report back beginning of next week when I get a pressure gauge installed on the intake manifold. Any chance anyone knows what boost pressure these volvo's usually produce?

Here's the workshop manual. Should have the turbo spec you're after.

Wow thanks for that Duke! Should be 20ish psi, it's a good start to troubleshooting the black smoke!

Glad to see you will still be out on the water! This might be smaller than your old boat but it will provide just as much peace of mind knowing that you will not miss out on all those good times that await. Have a great season! It looks as if Turbo Squirrel was at work in that one pic. LOL.

I always like the 26 Duffy.

going back in history a little bit without using search.

How did the QSB 5.9 480 push the 34 Libby along?

Plenty of power? Good cruise speed ? % Engine load at 18-20 knots ?

Wow great find, those are some nice boats. And 16.9 is not bad with that little squirrel cage motor. :)
