So a long while ago I went to a training either Yanmar or FPT, and in that training the discussion of cetane ratings being lower in the northeast game up. There was even a handout...but I long lost it. I have made it a practice since then to use a cetane booster when I treat the tanks for the winter (along with a fuel treatment). I tried to find an article or any info to that case online today but couldn’t find anything. Am I wrong? Have things changed? I would just like to have something in hand if a customer asks.

Mack Boring is big on that. The cetane rating in Japan, is far higher than what is allowed in the US.

Japan's Diesel fuel standard:

Diesel mandatory and standard specifications
Applicability
Property Standard
Mandatory Specifications Cetane Index 45 min.
Sulfur 10 ppm
Distillation, T90% 360°C max.
Standard Specifications FAME1 0.1 mass% max.
Triglyceride1 0.01 mass% max.
Flash point 45°C min.
Pour point Depends on regions and month
Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) Depends on regions and month
Carbon residue2 0.1 mass% max.
Kinematic viscosity @30C 1.7 mm2/s min.
Notes:
1. This specification is applicable to diesel fuels without international blending of FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester). Mandatory standards allow FAME upper blending limit of 0.5 max%. In such a case, additional standards include: Triglyceride: 0.01 mass% max.; Methanol: 0.01 mass% max.; Acid Value: 0.13 mg KOH/g max.; Formic Acid+Acetic Acid+Propionic Acid: 0.003 mass% max.; Acid Stability: 0.12 mg KOH/g max.
2. CCR, from 10% distillation residue.

Here in the States we typically see a minimum rating of 42-45.

For optimum performance a rating of 48-50 is recommended.

Do you have a way of emailing that, or sending me the link to it. Thanks John.

ASTM D975 sets the minimum Cetane rating of 40 here in the U.S.

Whatever additive you use make sure it has these chemicals in it:
Chemical Name CAS No Weight-% 2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate 27247-96-7, Mineral Spirits 8052-41-3, 2-Ethylhexanol 104-76-7. These are the primary Cetane chemicals that can boost the level in diesel.

Also anything good and worth while, 1 ounce will only treat 10 gallons anything outside of that ratio is snake oil.

Point boost will depend on the chemical make up of the additive.

This is what I use. Blitzen I could not find a can out in my personal shop to see what the contents where and could not find online. I used it in my modded 5.9 ram. That thing fueled so bad I couldn’t tell if it helped or not. Could not see if it helped on the dyno or on exhaust temps. I was always scared to look at pyrometer! I run that and the engines sound noticeably better with it. Sounds crazy maybe but I am a believer.

How much should I be adding to 300 gallons?
I can tell the difference almost immediately when I decom. I fill the new filters with treated fuel and compare it to the initial start up.

If you guys have 45 minutes to watch this presentation and care about this boring topic this is time well spent. From start to end it explains why cetane is important and how cetane improvers affect fuels, engines and emissions.

FPPF Marine Diesel Treatment 1qt = 375 gallons

FPPF 8+ Cetane Improver 1qt = 250 gallons (+2 points)
125 gallons (+4 points)
60 gallons (+8 points)
Not necessarily true, it depends on the base line of the fuel, not all fuels will react the same, so more is not always better.
