With shark season approaching and NY now requiring the use of Circle Hooks for all fishing including tourneys I figured I'd get some input on what hooks/sizes you guys have used; any info greatly appreciated.thanks guys

I picked up some Mustad MUS39960D-20/0 hooks.

I'll give them a try when the water heats up just a bit more.

Politicians in NY are jerks. They put out "feel good" regulations like this because there's no consequences or hard choices for them. At the same time they ignore real environmental issues that require leadership to resolve.

NY State has no say over what hooks are used in federal waters. State waters, and tournaments held in the state only. These guys are a bunch of misguided and misinformed ass holes that feel a need to continually churn out regulation. There is no doubt in my mind that this latest debacle is a direct result of the strong showing of Threshers in close to the beach the last few summers. Some Littoral Society Dipshits got their pantys in a bunch because they were being caught in close where they could see it.

It's possible that the DEC may be on hand to enforce the tournament rule at upcoming events but who's to say where a hook in a Shark came from?

Suppose you win a major tournament but used a J hook... fail the lie detector test and are disqualified?!?

I'd hate to be a tournament organizer in this environment.

I agree that there's a back story here about some group that went crazy about the near shore Thresher bite that's heated up in recent years.

What if you catch a shark on a Circle hook that already has a J hook and leader in it?

    What then?

    Stupid Law.

If convicted you will likely be sentenced to forty hours of community service. Doing things like planting marsh grass, cleaning beaches and artificially inseminating sea turtles.

We are having to order larger 16/0 18/0 mustad 39960D circle hooks for the tournaments now.

This is gonna be interesting at the captains meetings to see how the tournaments are gonna handle this. I have to believe a polygraph test of some sorts is gonna take place for potential winners.

I've tried them on my own in past years and miss a lot of fish with them
have only landed a couple out of maybe 20 bites, leaving the rod in the holder
until the fish is headed away, slowly increase drag, rod doubles, pulling drag steady for a few seconds then for some reason the hook doesn't catch like it should

Just curious what size and model did you use? Im asking so I can help accommodate anglers better at the store.

The Mustad 39960 in 16/0 is actually a pretty small hook for sharking. Better check them out before ordering. The space between the point and the shank is pretty tight on a 16/0. If it's not wide enough to go around the jaw it will likely slide right out. There is also a big difference in size from one brand to another.

I went with the Mustad 39960D 20/0 and also picked up the Eagle Claw L2045G for smaller baits

what happens if you bring a shark back with no hook in his mouth? Non tournament of course. I agree many sharks being caught will have other hooks in them. Usually rusty so I guess they will go that route.

If you tell them you caught it in federal waters they have absolutely no say in the matter.

the law I think is written sharks landed in NYS. Not caught in NYS waters. I agree, NYS can not enforce NYS laws in federal waters. The whole thing is a joke. tournaments should be a mess this year.

Here's the hook (Mustad 39960D) that I'm trying out.

I'll definitely be fishing less Shark tournaments than usual this year.
