Lot of rattle when boat goes In gear today, noise goes away as soon as any throttle is applied. I feel it is the damper plate? Wondering what’s involved to replace it? I could lift engine out of boat if need be or fix it in place if possible, almost seems easier if is on deck? Also, would it be alright to run like this for time being or not a good idea? Engine is Cummins 6BT with ZF gear, thanks in advance for any input on this

Probably gear rattle and not damper plate. If you want to check the damper plate, unbolt the bell housing, and slide transmission back. You need about 4" of clearance to get in and unbolt the damper plate to replace. Fairly easy and damper plates aren't expensive, so if you get this far just replace it.

Thanks for the feedback, Definitely not your typical gear rattle, Boat is used on a daily basis, this is a brand new noise it started yesterday when I got in to the dock. Everything appears to be working fine except for the rattle?

Yes, rattle is only when boat is put in gear, forward or reverse. Thanks for response, we’ll go with damper plate first

That looks like different style without springs? Do you have a part number? Going to be getting in to mine soon, thank you

You would need to measure diameter and number of splines. Was removed from a QSB 480 package

Finally got around to removing transmission, the silicone donut came apart apparently. Is this a good damper plate that expired prematurely?
