So pumped to own a BHM. It was setup cruiser style, but will start to get rigged for fishing asap.

Im sure I will have endless questions, so thank you ahead of time for anyone that takes the time to help me out or point me in the right direction.

Yes it has a fly bridge, and yes I dream of removing it someday and putting a nice mast up with all the toys, but for this year it stays.

I am a nerd and love the electronics so will be adding lots of screens and lights with some swivels rod-holders.

My first BIG question is in regards to cutting a fully opening tuna door. I am open to all input and ideas. This is for fish but also for my bro to get on boat in his wheelchair. So rail will need to open as well. I am also not apposed to a side door instead of transom, but this leads to my scary questions.

I have seen 31 BHM's with open transoms, but not sure this gives me greenlight "structurally" to cutting a door in my transom? I have also seen a BHM with a door in port side, but it also had a weird raised deck and the door was only cut about 16" from top (what i guessed from pics).

I would like to do this door myself to save the $, but if there are any experts in here that have done these or would even be interested in consulting on the job it would lower my bloodpresure a bit.

Thanks for any and all help. I will be sure to post some more pics of the girl, but to start here is one. (I have already pulled off the dinghy davits and biminis).

Pics of the inner and outer transom would help.

A little discussion starting on page three here might help.

Open stern like a lobster boat would be the easiest, cheapest and most useful for your purpose. You can back to the dock, keep it in gear, use a ramp and load up.

I kind of like the looks of that flybridge! You might find that its kind of a nice place on good days.

    Congrats!

I agree. So small and light I would keep it. Little mast for the gear/gin pole and you are done. Sweet rig.

Cappy, probably not a good idea because his Brother is in a wheel chair.

Good luck bud, you and your bro will love that one. :)

Hey, see if you can look up Simfin's boat. Pat Simmonds. Dam i forgot the name, someone here may remember. Pat is in a wheel chair and had his boat configured for him. Beautiful job on the helm set up, door, ramp etc. Helm station is great.

Edit, Kelly Anne is his boat.

Good topic. And congrats on your boat.
Lot of great guys here to help you out.
Thing is I haven't read a position in regards to cutting in the opening from anyone. Post some pics of the areas you are thinking of to door the access door. Not to close so everyone can see the BIG picture.
So I'm onboard to see some suggestions.

Great looking BHM! I have the same model without the flybridge. What’s she got for power?

Wow, great response and such positive comments!!! Much appreciated, especially after spending the day cleaning out a very dirty bilge. I am guessing from what I pulled out of there it had never been done or not in 10-20years.

She has a Volvo 60c 250 hp. Approx 2000 hrs. Full engine survey, oil samples etc checked out and knock on wood she runs great. Not even too loud or stinky for wife, so that’s a minor win.

Flybridge...... yes, we are all (kids included) really enjoying it. I am very surprised and swore it would be first thing to go. Now I would say there is a decent chance it stays! Cruising while underway, chilling up top at marina, and hanging up there after the kids go to bed ;)

MUD! Thx so much. I have fished on Kelly Anne and my bro knows Pat etc. but I didn’t have any pics and couldn’t picture how they did that. Thanks for finding those pics!

I will upload some more pics of boat and transom. I did think it may be nice to open door into cockpit, so you don’t need to remember to open it prior to docking. Also maybe save the hinges if you ever bumped Dock with it open outboard.
