Suggestions on reasonable place to have a Velvet Drive gone through?
I used Nopper Marine in Fairhaven Mass. Happy with the job, sounds like they know what they are doing as well. 1300 ish for a rebuild if I recall correctly.
Anyone, any experience with Atlantic in Topsfield MA ??
Plus 1, on Nopper Marine. They most likely have all the parts In Stock.
Atlantis Marine Gear in Topsfield did two Velvet drives for me and both were trouble free. Chris Hughes 978-887-0001
I agree, Atlantis has done mine and they bare pro's; they are not cheap but you get what you pay for with them.
Thanks to all
Another vote for Atlantis.
they are really easy to work on and rebuild kits on amazon only run 165.00 and you get absolutely everything needed for a complete job except the pump if that fails, when I say everything I mean every clutch plate and gasket. If it dosent turn in either forward or reverse its most likely the pump in that case its a 5 min job to repair. Mine have always slipped then failed, I can say I never had one one loose both forward and reverse clutch plates at the same time. I will try and figure out how to scan my workshop manual and post it here. It really can be done in about 2 hours. you got all winter..save a few bucks.
Yes, I have done my sons 1:1 so only the reduction part is new to me. Time for me to "come clean" on what happened.
My input shaft spun in the damper plate. Yes, I'm the guy that is always touting the R&D dampers from PYI for their get-home ability; but no more. Mine only lasted 6 seasons and failed without any warning, damaged my input shaft, and of course the get-home feature didn't work. When I called them, they said it was underrated for my engine. They did the specifying not me. The center section was very soft, easily marked with a file.
So, I withdraw my recommendation for these plates
