If you have to ask, you should probably bring someone that knows the engine. JMHO

timing belt and valve guides are the issues I've heard about. I understand most of the valve guide issues have been corrected, but it may be prudent to confirm.

As with all engines, the exhaust design is usually what gets them in trouble. Inspect the turbo for replacement (why?) and if rust is present in the exhaust side. Heat exchanger maintenance records or indications of service is a plus also.

ZF63 is a good reverse gear for that application.

The 6LP DTP is a 24-valve engine. Should be a 4000 hour plus motor, with proper maintenance and correct prop pitch (to turn up to 3800).

The valve issue was on the LP(A) -STP/STE series engines.

The 6lp-DTP (260HP) (12 Valve Head) was available Aug 2001 - Dec 2006. We have two in our work barge and beat them hard. We also just rebuilt 1 from crank bearings up in a 29FT Luhrs. All parts were still available from Distributor with a few coming from the Yanmar Warehouse in GA.

Outside of rust and rot on the outside you really need to start wrenching into the engine which is not often well received with out a hired, insured mechanic or legit marine engine surveyor.
