Why would you want to have to guide the rope back into the boat while hauling ? Reach up to the hauler and have water running down your arm? Just install a nice 10" hydroslave or even a electra dyne will be just fine for your play lobstering. Simple davit can be made to slide out of a roof mounted rocket launcher rod holder. I build a plain jane davit for my electra dynes that also would work fine and its simple to remove if you don't need it. Build a nice tackle locker and mount the hauler in it.

not a fan of "all the components"...and "commercial look" Steve....sorry :(...but maybe if I can't come up with something "slick" :)?
I pull by hand now....runs down arms, apron and I love the smell of my fabric crocs on the drive home :D

Maybe look into those haulers that go into a nice zippered carry bag, Ace or Brutus brand. They look nice & sporty but don't pull shit. Oh just sold a Electra Dyne to a guy yesterday who had no love for his Discovery Bay hauler.

Here's two different haulers on small boats. The first one has the valve on the davit which I thought was pretty well put together.
The picture of the little halibut set up, long line hauler I designed. I like it because it noodled the ground line into tubs. That's not my boat, it's my buddies. Hope he doesn't mind his picture up here.
If your doing just a little hauling for fun you don't really need this. But i thought some of the readers might find it interesting.
There is any number of ways to set up haulers. It's just personal preference.

Im researching some of these things myself for the holland, gets real cramped and kinda messy/wet in the wheel house having a hauler on the steering bulkhead so am thinking of going davit mounted..

For me it's for the anchor mostly but a few pots here and there too.

Be nice to use an ED or HS brand as they are popular and supported in these parts but the "My-t" or Safe-t" hauler comes out of the box how im thinking too. Also seems to have pleanty of power and I could potentially move it around the boat fairly easily if I wanted to pull from the transom for instance.

Same company makes a hanging model too.

You wouldn't believe how many ED's i have sold to guys that are shit canning their safe t haulers. One remark i hear from my customers is "should of bought a ED the first time".

Something to point out on the topic, part of the reason you probably do not see many pullers hanging off the davit in the northeast (literally mean when they function as a block and swing around), at least as far as the typical non full time commercial fleet goes, is we tend to use them to haul anchors more than anything else...

With an anchor you haul until the chain makes it to the hauler then you pull the chain and anchor by hand the rest of the way over the block, to hold it off the boat, which could be 50 ft. That wouldnt work with a hanging puller setup.

I'd bet if the edges of the plates were duraliner coated or one of the other "sticky" types of coating it would help to pull the chain also, just a bit of grip to bite into the chain.

all of you are correct about the hauler swinging around on the davit.....2nd thought....that ain't gonna work as a permanent install

Steve, how do you slow down an Electric hauler ?

Snow Squall had a hydraulic hauler. I don't think there is any simple way to vary the speed of a ED.

For a non-commercial application, having hydro hoses hanging off the side I think seems much messier than an ED or even transom mounted hauler. Even the comm lobster guys who have their haulers mounted with exposed hydro lines have to replace them much more frequently that bulkhead mounted ones. Also depending on your davit, as noted above the lack of fairleads means you are likely to pop the line out of the hauler unless you are right over whatever you are hauling. And, also as noted above you would have to tail all that line yourself by hand which is a PITA. Looks like a neat setup for the right application, but for light intermittent use I would go with an ED. Ive had two over the years and they are worth every penny.
